Delivering a community garden at Styles House

Last week we were delighted to celebrate the completion of a new community garden located near one of our sites, Styles House, in Southwark.

In order to complete the project ready for the residents to enjoy the space, we had a helpful team of volunteers from Ralph Lauren London, who ‘mucked in’ with our team to get the raised beds prepared for spring planting. After a safety talk from our site team, the day was spent filling the beds with turf and getting to know the residents who said they were looking forward to tending to their new garden.

In collaboration with BOST (Bankside Open Spaces Trust), our site team were pleased to offer their services to landscape this pocket of land which was re-purposed to provide residents with a tranquil, recreational space close to their homes. This area of Southwark had previously been occupied by several disused garages, which our team demolished to make way for the garden to be crafted.

To ensure we kept this project as environmentally friendly as possible during construction, we limited the removal of waste from the site. The masonry and other materials that were demolished were used for aggregate in the ground, and the garage walls were utilised to construct the raised flower beds that are scattered around the garden.

Our Senior Projects Manager Ben Deakin, who is responsible for overseeing the first phase of the re-development of Styles House said:

"It is excellent to have been involved in delivering this garden project. Since we started phase 1 here at Styles House, our team have been keen to meet those living and working in the local community, and providing this space for the residents has allowed us to do just that. This garden will be a great addition to the area; we have re-cycled and re-used materials wherever possible to minimise waste and disruption to our neighbours and because of this we think the garden has a lot of character. We hope the local community will enjoy the space for years to come."

On the day, we were also joined by the extended professional team working on the re-development of styles house including representatives from Igloo and Calfordseaden.
